We always use a couple that are "off airport" now (Tropic Car Rental and Payless.) But in the past, we did use Econo (not Economy, but Econo) a couple of times and were always pleased with them. _________________ ~Amy~®

We've been going for years.
Our recent history (say the last 5 years):
Econo in 2011.
(The people get an A+; the cars get a C-. Just my opinion)
Payless in 2010.
Payless in 2009.
Payless in 2008.
Payless in 2007.
We're back to using Payless in 2012.
It is an off-site location, but from our reservation, it looks like the airport authority has managed to impose a fee for meeting/greeting and transporting people to their off-site location (less than 5 mins away from the airport). _________________ Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be - Grandma Moses (1860 - 1961) |

My first five years or so I rented from Dollar at the airport. The next five from National also at the airport, Last year I started to rent from Deals on Wheels offsite. They were located at the Toyota dealership a mile from the airport. They picked you up when you land and drop you off when you leave and had the best price I thought.
So last week I rented online fully expecting to be picked up when I arrived yesterday. When no one came I called. The person on the other end of the line said Deals on Wheels is now Thrifty at the airport. But I think they still has the best price. My weekly base price is $195, for the 5 speed. They didn't have a 5 speed available I got an auto (a Yaris) for the same price. _________________ 81st trip November 15-21, 2020 |

To add to my list, we used Payless in 2012.
Car worked well. They said ignore the "check engine" light on the dash.
They assured me it was a continuing problem that had been checked out.
It DID work well. It was far from new with 55,000 km on it.
Maybe sometime I can find the right blend...new cars, good price, good service.
Next year, I think, we will pay the premium price for a larger car/small SUV. I think we are tired of cramming luggage into a Yaris-Corolla-sized car...because I believe that 4 adults will again be arriving on the same day.
Despite the high cost of gas, we are not driving that many miles, so we will opt for some comfort and size.
Maybe we'll check again when we see the price difference.
Yes, I think the fee for the off-site agencies is 6.5%...about half of what you pay for using an airport kiosk. _________________ Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be - Grandma Moses (1860 - 1961) |

The Aruba government announced raising the rental car operator's permit from AFL$750 to ALF$3,400 last week. This is how I understand it from reading (half guessing) the local paper in Papiamento. You will be paying higher rental car fees from now on.
The premise is the tourists can afford it. _________________ 81st trip November 15-21, 2020 |
