I find that a great part of the information I have was acquired by looking up something and finding something else on the way.

What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight - it's the size of the fight in the dog.

Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn't.

When you cannot make up your mind which of two evenly balanced courses of action you should take - choose the bolder.

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those
who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

I know only two tunes: one of them is "Yankee Doodle," and the other isn't.

The very purpose of existence is to reconcile the glowing opinion we have of ourselves with the appalling things that other people think about us.

From Thomas Friedman's column in today's New York Times......
â??Just as a few lonely economists warned us we were living beyond our financial means and overdrawing our financial assets, scientists are warning us that weâ??re living beyond our ecological means and overdrawing our natural assets,â? argues Glenn Prickett, senior vice president at Conservation International. But, he cautioned, as environmentalists have pointed out: â??Mother Nature doesnâ??t do bailouts.â?
One of those who has been warning me of this for a long time is Paul Gilding, the Australian environmental business expert. He has a name for this moment â?? when both Mother Nature and Father Greed have hit the wall at once â?? â??The Great Disruption.â?
â??We are taking a system operating past its capacity and driving it faster and harder,â? he wrote me. â??No matter how wonderful the system is, the laws of physics and biology still apply.â? We must have growth, but we must grow in a different way. For starters, economies need to transition to the concept of net-zero, whereby buildings, cars, factories and homes are designed not only to generate as much energy as they use but to be infinitely recyclable in as many parts as possible. Letâ??s grow by creating flows rather than plundering more stocks. |
