I thought the pack of donkeys in Seroe Colorado have been coralled. It was down to three the last time I saw them in August. I did not see them last trip at all. Imagine my surprise when I saw them in my second week this trip. And the pack has grown to five. There is another baby among them. The one with the red string on the neck has assumed the lead role. I saw them for the past two days in a row grazing in Seroe Colorado.
The young buck which has a red string on the neck has become the alpha male. He is keeping watch over his herd while they are grazing.

I thought I saw a baby the day before I took the picture. But it was not in the group of five. Turned out the group has six. This is the baby. The picture was taken Monday afternoon.
The pack leader being ever so vigilant.
Another picture of the baby.
The leader stays behind as the pack moves.
The pack crosses the road.
Do you think the jenny in the foreground is pregnant?
The pack leader crosses the road first.

We saw the pack leader with the rope when we there in May.
The baby is so CUTE!
Next time I'm out that way I have to remember to bring some carrots with me. _________________ ~Amy~®

I was correct one of the jennies was pregnant. Now there is a seventh member to the pack. I am leaving the island today. Saw them grazing in Seroe Colorado this morning after the rain.
This is the new (he) member's older sister only by a few month's.
The pack leader was exerting his territorial claim protecting the clan.
The youngester took after the big daddy.

Almost a month later the pack of seven donkeys is now six. I presume a young buck left the group to seek greener pastures and perhaps a mate. These are taken Sunday, December 11 near the big red anchor where a coconut vendor is selling coconut on weekends. Someone fed the donkeys mangoes.
Yesterday morning at dawn, I made my four and a half mile route along baby Beach and as I approached the refinery I met the pack head on. The patriarch (the one with the red noose) went by me. But his pack following him turned around and trotted back when they saw me running toward them. This lasted for about 20 seconds until the pack stopped at where the road was wide enough to let me run pass them before they turned around again to their pack leader.
PS: Free roaming donkeys apparently do not live in Aruba only. 50 miles away in Punto Fijo, Venezuela there are packs of donkeys too. Last week one made the local news in a tragic manner. A Tiara Air plane hit a donkey on the runway while taking off from Punto Fijo, killing it instantly. The plane landed safely in Aruba. As a result Tiara Air suspended flying to Punto Fijo after sundown. _________________ 81st trip November 15-21, 2020 |

Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2012, I began my early morning jog in Seroe Colorado. It rained heavily a few hours ago. Woke me up in my sleep. This is only my second day on the island this trip. I was surprised to see the pack resting by the road side. I passed them by at 6:10. It was still fairly dark. If I am not mistaken there is another addition to the pack. I counted seven in the pack. The new addition has dark fur. Someone may confirm this. _________________ 81st trip November 15-21, 2020 |

I will have to look for them in April and remember to bring carrots or apples. I remember seeing them in the spot you mentioned last May so that must be their hangout. _________________ ~Amy~®

Correction. The pack has eight members. Going out to dinner in the car I saw them grazing in Seroe Colorado yesterday. _________________ 81st trip November 15-21, 2020 |

Amy I saw them near the red anchor and that is where we got the pic of the baby in November. _________________

The last time I came to Aruba was January, 2012 just before the announcement of the refinery closing. It has been nine months since. This will likely be my last visit for work unless someone takes over the refinery operations.
Went out to lunch driving through Seroe Colorado, the herd has grown to 11 from 7 nine months ago. I did not have my camera with me. Will take some pictures next time around. _________________ 81st trip November 15-21, 2020 |

As a matter of course I need to update this. I did not think I would be back on the island again after the refinery turned into a terminal operation but I did. Arriving on Monday I saw the herd again. Its number is now 13.
The last time I came to Aruba was in November, 2012. _________________ 81st trip November 15-21, 2020 |

For you, such a frequent visitor, did it seem strange after 18 months or so?
I would think that you would notice things that stand out...even like the rotary/traffic circle by the airport.
Was a frequently-patronized restaurant different or even closed (or better)?
Glad you were able to make another visit. Always liked your reports...even though I think we are at 29 visits in 25 years. We do our best! _________________ Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be - Grandma Moses (1860 - 1961) |
