Looks like there will be two holidays during our stay (April 26-May 2). King's Day is the day we arrive so I'm not too worried about that one, but Labor Day is on May 1. There are also 3 cruise ships in port that day.

Will most things be closed that day? Any advise on what to do to avoid the cruise crowds?

Hi Susan,

Hope you have a wonderful time on your upcoming trip to Aruba.

As far as trying to avoid the "boat people", I would suggest not going into Oranjestad that day, and avoid the touristy spots like the California Lighthouse and the Alto Vista chapel.

I have to ask you this; are you a shopper? I've spent many hours sitting on various benches all over Aruba while my wife buzzes in and out of stores. When you're downtown you'll notice that the stone bench outside of Little Switzerland looks fairly worn. That's mostly from me. Lol

Have a great time.

Thanks, Glenn! I figured it would good to avoid Oranjestad. I was worried Palm Beach would get pretty crowded but it sounds like it wouldn't be a good day for driving around the island either, so maybe that will be our "hang out at the hotel" day.

No, I'm not much of a shopper but I would like to spend a morning in Oranjestad, just to walk around and maybe have lunch. Any suggestions for a lunch spot? Something with a view of the water would be nice or a good spot for people-watching.

Iguana Joe's is a good spot for both!

Hi Susan,

For lunch with a view of the water, you could try West Deck, just a bit beyond the downtown (between downtown and The Talk of The Town hotel) on L.G Smith Boulevard. Actually you'll pass it on your way in from the airport, it's on the ocean side.

Part of the menu as I recall is tapas style. The ocean is right there; beautiful view. A little short on people-watching but the ocean view is wonderful.

People watching? Grab a cold drink and have a seat at my favourite spot; the stone bench outside Little Switzerland, the one opposite the Swatch kiosk. I won't be there so by all means, sit in my spot and watch Aruba go by.

I'll keep your seat warm for you, Glenn. Smile

Anything else we should check out in Oranjestad? I'd like to see the fort. Where does the trolley take you?

We're back from our trip and had a wonderful time, loved Aruba. I can see why people go back again and again.

Just wanted to say thanks to Corrine for the Iguana Joe's suggestion. Very nice spot for people-watching and good food too. My Iguana Kiss was delicious.

Glenn, I saw your bench and said hello.
