We will be in Aruba the week of February 10th. Normally we travel there in March. I saw a brief article in a travel magazine about Carnival in Aruba. It said that Feb 12th (Fat Tuesday) was the grand finale of the event.
Has anyone been there for these events? If so I'd appreciate some advice on what to do and any helpful tips. Also can you give me any links to find a schedule of the events. We will be staying at the Riu.

Thank you,
Greg

Thanks Amy. It's been awhile since I've been on the Board. Last time we were in Aruba the Natural Bridge was still standing LOL

I have been to the street parades both on Saturday at San Nicolas and Sunday at Oranjestad. It is great fun but..... they are always hours behind the sceduled time, it involves a long time standing on your feet and the sun will be burning on you. So be aware of that. I was lucky that I could see it fom a trailer along the road, so I had a chair, plenty of food and drink and shade. If not, I would still have done it, as it is great fun.

Also I did jouvert morning at San Nicolas at Saturday very early morning. That was the most fun I had in years. Not many tourists to be seen there.

Yes Amy it has been awhile LOL. We've been putting 3 children through college in that time period Shocked .

Dutchdushi,
Thank you for your response. Looking at the Carnival Schedule, I feel I may have picked a week too late to visit. We really wish to see the people of Aruba all dressed up in their elaborate costumes of Carnival. We don't arrive Sunday until 1:30pm. We're staying at the Riu. Our flight leaves Pittsburgh, Pa at 5:30am, so we'll be exhausted Sunday evening. Will we be able to see people in costumes on Monday or Tuesday?

The further you get from the resorts that weekend, the less you'll find open. Most non-tourist places will be closed on Sunday and many will be close Monday as well, or have reduced hours.

Generally, restaurants will be open, but some of the ones downtown may not be.

During the parade on Sunday, traffic will be re-routed around the downtown area. Taxi drivers will know the way.

Too bad you arrive on Sunday after a long day of travelling. Maybe you get lucky to see some dressed up people with the burning of Momo on Tuesday in Oranjestad. But the main events will be the great parades. Maybe you will get a glimp of it on your way to the Riu. Enjoy!

If we take a Cab to the Riu, do you think they would swing by someplace were we could get a peak at the parade? Or will they be steared away by the police?

Hey gkline! The parade is loads of fun, but always behind as dushidushi said. The big parade is packed with people- I don't see how you would be able to just get a glimpse of it!

I was fortunate last year to be taken to the Lighting Parade one night in San Nicolaas. The party went all night long! Something new I'd never done in the 7 years I've been going. Cool
